Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world. 60% of the population is without electricity and 40% of drinking water. 60% of the population survive on less than $ 2 a day. However, in recent years there has been limited but constant growth allowed by political stability. The economy is largely dependent on agriculture, which accounts for around 60% of GDP. From 2010 to 2019 we operated in the country mainly in the Water and Food Safety sectors.

FOOD SECURITY

Rational beekeeping project to ensure food security in the Unguja district - Zanzibar Archipelago (2010 - 2012)

• Lead partner: MLFM, Partner: ZABA, local forestry department.
• Beneficiaries: 50 families of beekeepers and artisans
• Results: the existing groups of traditional beekeepers were strengthened, new groups of beekeepers were organized in the southern region of the island, a particularly disadvantaged area, the integration of women into the beekeeping sector facilitated, job opportunities offered to local artisans (carpenters, tailors, blacksmiths), use of beeswax both for the construction of wax sheets and for the production of derivative products such as natural cosmetics, candles, creation of a commercial outlet for honey produced in the region

WATER

Aqueduct in the Iringa District (2011 - 2014)

• Project duration: 3 years
• Lead partner: MLFM, Partner: Iringa District (24 Village Administrations) and Iringa Region
• Beneficiaries: 45,000 inhabitants
• Results: the health conditions of the population in the intervention areas improved, especially for the poorest; facilitated access to the water resource, with the strengthening of the management skills of the user population (Capacity Building), educated the population to preserve the structures acquired during the project that allow them to get out of certain deplorable sanitary conditions caused by the lack of water, protection and conservation of the natural resources of the District and the Region, especially those affected by the aqueduct and in particular the area of ​​the springs that could be destroyed by human work or by pollution of the water table, decrease in the negative impact caused by the quality of the water on the economic situation of families

Water and hygiene for the Igingilanyi Village (2015 - 2016)

• Results: connection of the village to the aqueduct network, rehabilitation of two water storage tanks, upgrading of 6 public fountains, activation of a water management committee, awareness of hygiene and health

Aquaplus (2017 - 2019)

• Project duration: 2 years
• Lead partner: MLFM, Partner: Vicoba Sustainable Development Agency (VSDA), Institute of Marine Sciences - University of Dar es Salaam (IMS), Zanzibar Beekeeping Association (ZABA), Rotary International - Districts 2041-2042 and University of Milan - Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences
• Beneficiaries: 6,300
• Results: We restored an old unused well and built another to provide the two villages with clean water. Construction of 12 fountains that will distribute further clear and drinkable water in the various areas of the villages. We have undertaken meetings with local fishing communities to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove conservation and sustainable fishing techniques, with a view to environmental sustainability. Beekeeping techniques will be introduced through the construction of hives and a laboratory for processing and storage, formation of 2 female-dominated cooperatives for the management of fish and honey supply chains, enhancing the role of women who are a point of reference in management of the household economy
