In 2008, the Haitian territory had over half of the population who did not have access to drinking water. The non-use of efficient water supply systems leads to the inevitable worsening of the sanitary conditions of the area, both in rural and urban contexts. Our intervention begins with the construction of an aqueduct and then turns into support for the 2010 earthquake emergency and the cholera pandemic in 2011, reaching the last project linked to the WASH sector in 2015.

WATER AND AGRICULTURE

Haiti Aqueduct, Torbeck Municipality, Southern Department (2008 - 2011)

• Beneficiaries: 45,024
• Results: increased sustainable access to drinking water and improved hygiene conditions in favor of 15,500 inhabitants, increased productivity of the agro-zootechnical sector and improved the state of food and nutritional security of 270 peasant families and three peasant associations

Aquaplus (2015 - 2018)

• Funder: Rotary District 2040; EXPO Milan 2015; the municipality of Milan
• Project duration: 3 years
• Lead partner: MLFM, Partner: AVSI, University of Milan - Faculty of Agriculture, Municipality of Torbeck
• Beneficiaries: 7,000
• Results: 4km of new pipes, 45 public fountains and settling basins, the irrigation system was restored and expanded with new channels and the repair of existing banks and outlets, the creation of family gardens with differentiated crops encouraged; creation of processing and conservation centers for indigenous agricultural products to create a commercial network; formation of autonomous cooperatives able to manage the centers and commercial activities, training of local agronomists to foster a new agricultural culture

Water to rebuild Haiti following the January 2010 earthquake:

• Project duration: 1 year
• Lead partner: MLFM, Partner: Municipality of Torbeck and the Service National Eau Potable (SNEP)
• Beneficiaries: 51,024
• Results: 10 artesian wells built, depth 60/80 m equipped with hydraulic pump for lifting the water and a pitch in concrete for access, installed 12 batteries of 4 latrines equipped with leaky septic tank and access cabins, Assistance technical to water management committees, training in "water and sanitation"

EMERGENCY

Cholera Emergency (2011)

• Beneficiaries: infected people, entire area
• Results: the Cholera Mobile Unit was built, a special intervention unit that works full time to fight the epidemic
